EPLE stands for Effective Pre-Lecture Engagement. It is the initiative of a group of lecturers at the University of Adelaide who have been trialling more effective ways of delivering their programs than are provided for in the standard lecture plus tutorial model.

Putting it up front

There are many different ways of implementing EPLE, but they are all united by a common strategy: packaging up the key concepts and/or core content of a lecture topic into a small module, and presenting it to students in advance of the full lecture session, ideally in conjunction with some kind of formative or diagnostic assessment.

It's how you do it

EPLE is perhaps not a wildly innovative idea. After all, traditional higher education practice prescribed pre-reading as a way of preparing for lectures. However, our initial research indicates that not all kinds of prescribed preparation are equally effective in respect of student engagement and improved learning outcomes. How you do it makes a real difference. That's what we are researching.

Rocket Science?

While much of our practice is underpinned by modern digital technologies, the approach does not in principle require such systems. Depending on the topic and discipline area, it can all be done in good old fashioned hard copy, if need be. But if you do want to embrace digital technologies, our approach provides for that to be done bit-by-bit.

Wider Transformation
At the same time, we see EPLE as the transformative tip-of-the-iceberg when it comes to facilitating broader change in our higher education learning and teaching practice. Paying attention to the pre-lecture engagement has for many of us driven a change in the very nature of the lecture session itself. Lectures have now become more active, and more interactive, with much of the traditional lecture content now being delivered to students through other means. We believe this makes for richer and more effective use of face-to-face sessions.
